Eat Well, B. Good.
Most people are creatures of habit. We go to the grocery store on the same day every week and fill our carts with the same stuff. If it’s Monday, roast chicken's for dinner and Tuesday always means tacos. We are comforted with knowing what to expect—even if our meals aren’t that exciting, we know what we’re going to eat. That’s what makes eating healthier so scary sometimes. We are so used to eating a certain way that we rarely think about what we’re actually putting into our bodies. So to eat a healthier diet means actually waking up and paying attention to what's on your plate.
This past month I've been going through a roller coaster of emotions. The one thing I loved eating the most started fighting against my body. It left me feeling bloated, un-easy and at times running to the washroom. That one thing is gluten. Tragic. Ever since I started noticing symptoms, It became even more important for me to take care of my health and be cautious of what I put in my body. Coming from someone whose diet always involved some sort of gluten, it took me awhile to get used to opting for gluten-free options if/when available. Since I've never had to think twice before on what to order when I go out to eat, it began affecting my mental health. I mean, how can I say no to pizza or a juicy burger... Sigh.
Luckily over the course of time I've learned that eating a healthier diet doesn’t have to mean deprivation. You don’t have to cut out your favourite foods completely—you just have to make a few changes. Treat yourself because you deserve the very best and with many restaurants offering gluten-free options just as or even better than the real deal, it's making my transition easier than I expected. I'm able to still consume the foods I love and that makes me happy.
With a lifestyle that always involves me being on-the-go, I'm always looking for a spot to grab a quick bite in between work. I try to be as healthy as possible but sometimes that becomes challenging because let's be honest, all I crave are things that aren't good for me. Walking down the street from where I typically go to get some work done, I discovered one of B.GOOD Canada's locations and instantly became a regular ever since. They make "real" food good and what had me feelin' really good is the fact that they offer gluten-free options and do it really well.
With their mission to bring a farm-to- table mandate to urbanity, the story behind B.GOOD sets the bar for the city’s other quick service establishments. Having started under the simple premise to make real food fast, B.GOOD takes a more conscious approach to the food they choose to serve and the quality of food is shown in each one of their drool-worthy menu items. As mentioned earlier, paying attention to what's on your plate is important and B.GOOD does the legwork for you. Their mission is to use “food with roots,” paying homage to the growers and producers they work closely with to provide the highest quality products to their customers. They care deeply about accommodating their guests, especially those with dietary restrictions so you can always guarantee leave knowing that you're putting nothing but the best ingredients in your body.
This past week, they recently opened up their fifth location up at Yonge and Eglinton. With five across the GTA, B.GOOD is proud to serve real food fast. To celebrate the launch of their new location, I had the chance to attend their exclusive media dinner alongside a few of my favourite food bloggers in the city. We got the chance to check out their beautiful new space, chat with the marketing manager - Meg Folkinga and try some of their delicious menu items with a side of refreshing lemonades (beet and ginger being my favourite!).
“At the media dinner, I had many wonderful and genuine conversations about health, farm to table, and sustainability that really fuel our passion to help local businesses grow. We are committed to keep the momentum going and shifting the food industry in a health-conscious direction." Meg Folkinga
From The Menu
"El Guapo" Chicken Burger + Sweet Potato Fries
anti-biotic free chicken breast, bacon, homemade jalapeño slaw, jalapeño ranch, smoked gouda cheese
Nothing says summer much like a grilled chicken burger, "el guapo" style! This juicy burger hit the spot. The chicken breast was grilled to perfection and the homemade jalapeño slaw added just the right amount of kick. I love cheese on my burgers so I opted to add a slice of smoked gouda and I'm so glad that I did. The melted gouda on top made for a ooey-gooey bite, just the way I like it. I think my mouth just salivated a little typing this. Oops. The best part of it all? I was able to devour this burger and not feel sick after because B.GOOD offers a gluten-free bun option for all of their burgers and sandwiches. I couldn't taste the difference between a regular bun and the gluten-free bun = happy camper.
Southwestern Chicken Salad
anti-biotic free chicken breast, mesclun, avocado, grilled corn, tomatoes, black beans, toasted corn, chipotle puree, balsamic vinaigrette
Yes, there are wimp, sad salads out there in the world, but indeed there are some seriously delicious ones too that will make you question everything you thought a salad “should” be. This salad off B.GOOD's menu is just that. It's hearty, extremely flavourful and most importantly filing. The combination of grilled corn, black beans and chipotle puree is like a flavour bomb in your mouth (maybe I'm partially biased because I love chipotle anything!). It was love at first bite with this salad. The ingredients complimented each other extremely well and left me wanting more after my last bite.
Cheers to living a healthier lifestyle without cutting back on things that you love the most.
